Fishy Frankie Strikes Again

Saugus River:
Frank Klempa reeled in another big one recently just outside the
Saugus River. A fisherman for many years, Klempa caught this
25 lb Striper at a location in the Atlantic that he will not
divulge. Several delicious fish fries were enjoyed by his
family.

The Marleah E. Graves
School Building
A Treasured Gem in Saugus
By Janice Jarosz
Built in 1894 and one of the last remaining buildings
of its kind, the design of the school was replicated from the Romanesque
style of architecture common in Europe from the 9th to the 12th
centuries and copied from Henry Hobson Richardson. The material used on
the exterior is red brick and mixed with granite. An imposing tower
graces the structure and the interior consists of extensive woodwork
throughout the halls and classrooms.
The property, 52 Essex Street, was originally named the
Bond School, was given to the town by Mr. Charles Henry Bond, of
Cliftondale. Mr. Bond was born in Saugus in 1846 and started his own
cigar business at the age of 17 with approximately $17 to his name.
His business flourished and eventually he moved to
Blackstone Street, Boston, MA. His business made the famous Blackstone
cigars. Throughout his life, Mr. Bond donated much of his wealth back
into the community to aspiring musicians and industrial students.
In 1994, the town of Saugus voted to rename the school
the Marleah E. Graves Building. Ms. Graves, was a favorite and much
loved teacher for close to 47 years at the school. Her classroom has
been renovated for use by the community and will re-open in the spring.
By purchasing this artifact, your donation will help
support the efforts of many Saugus residents who are working to renovate
the entire school building. The M.E.G. Foundation is being formed to
oversee the project. The plan is to convert this historical building
into a cultural and meeting center for all to enjoy.
Contact Janice Jarosz at 781-233-7035 or e-mail at

to purchase the collectible. The cost of the collectible is $15.00 plus
$2.50 for shipping and handling.
